The fetal pig that you will dissect has been injected with a colored latex (rubber) compound. The arteries have been filled with red latex and the veins with blue. An incision was made on the side of the neck to enable the injections. The incision can be seen in the first photograph below.

Several different pig dissections were used to obtain the photographs below. As a result, a structure shown in one photograph may look different than the same structure shown in another photograph.

Biology II Lecture & Lab Course Overview

  • Biology II Lecture & Lab, BIOL 1011, is a four-credit lecture/lab online biology course incorporating an at-home laboratory component. The emphasis of the course is on providing a conceptual framework for understanding the basics of modern biology, ecology, and biodiversity so that the student will be well equipped to apply this knowledge in his or her further studies.

* This course is considered an upper-level undergraduate course (300 level or above)

Biology II Lecture & Lab Course Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the basic content of the discipline

Biology II Lecture & Lab Course Prerequisites

  • One semester of college-level biology (BIOL 1010)

How do exams work?

All exams are taken online. Major exams are required to be proctored online through ProctorU. For instructions on how to take your exams online, visit UNE Online’s ProctorU site. Please note exams must also be proctored with the UNE-approved external webcam.

How do labs work?

For the laboratory portion of the course, most weeks will also have an assigned laboratory exercise. Assessment for each lab lesson will be the questions that are listed throughout each lesson. In addition to conducting the laboratory exercises and taking the assessment, you will also need to write a lab report.

My favorite lab was naturally the microbes everywhere lab (microbiology is the greatest thing to me). We had to write our lab report with it and it showed me how to properly do a real experiment. I have written many lab reports before, but never one that I had to set up the experiment purposely for – it was amazing, challenging, and really encouraged me to “think” as opposed to simply “do.”

Being a person who isn’t afraid to argue a point or matter, both instructors responded very well to my mentality, and rather than shutting me down in my questions and arguments, they instead opened up for a discussion and debated with me. I loved this as it showed the teachers encouraged interactions and discussions – what an amazing way to truly understand the material!

My instructors for Biology I and Biology II were very student-success-focused, very interactive, and exceptionally passionate about their work. Each of them had different teaching styles and different ways of challenging students, but each was very supportive and helpful.
